Off-page SEO & backlinks for electricians
Off-page SEO is everything you do away from your own website to build its authority and reputation, and it mostly comes down to backlinks. Where on-page is what you control, off-page is the rest of the web vouching for you, which is exactly why it’s the slowest, fiddliest piece to earn.
Why backlinks matter for electricians
A backlink is simply a link from another website to yours, and the easiest way to think about them is as votes of confidence. When a decent, relevant site links to you, it’s like a mate vouching for your work, and Google treats it as a signal that you’re worth trusting and bumps you up the rankings. It’s been one of the biggest factors in search for years, and for a local trade it still carries real weight. I go deeper in my guide to backlinks for electricians.
But not all votes count the same, and this is where it matters for electricians specifically. A link does four useful things at once when it’s the right kind. It acts as a trust signal, a link from a local trade body or a supplier tells Google you’re a legitimate, established business. It gives you a local edge, because links from your own area tie you to your patch and lift your odds in the local pack far more than a random national link would. It brings the right customers, since a link from a trade site or a local page sends people who actually need an electrician rather than tyre-kickers. And it acts as a shield, a clean, relevant link profile keeps you well clear of the spam filters that quietly bury sites with dodgy ones.

Relevance beats quantity, every single time
This is the bit the cheap “SEO packages” get catastrophically wrong, and it’s worth being blunt about. One link from a local plumber’s site, or from a supplier you actually buy from, outweighs twenty from random directories. For local rankings, those local and relevant links carry more weight than generic high-authority ones, which is the opposite of what most people assume.
Picture it. A link from “Joe’s Plumbing in Leeds”, earned because you did a job together, tells Google you’re active and trusted in Leeds, the exact thing you want it to believe. A link from a random overseas casino site? Useless at best, and at worst it’s toxic enough to drag you down. Relevant links mean higher rankings, better traffic, and an impact that keeps paying off for years; irrelevant ones fade fast or actively backfire. Quality isn’t just better here, it’s the whole game.
How to earn local links, the honest way
You don’t need to be technical to build links, and you definitely don’t need to buy them. You need to be a real, active local business and give people a genuine reason to link to you, which, granted, takes time and a bit of legwork, this is the slow-burn part of the whole system.
The most reliable move for a tradesperson is to sponsor a local football team or community group. You pick up a local link, a stack of goodwill, and your name in front of the exact community you serve, all from one cheque. Beyond that, get listed by the suppliers and manufacturers you already use, many run “find an installer” or approved-fitter pages and will happily add you if you ask. Lean on your trade bodies too, NICEIC, NAPIT and local business groups often link out to member profiles. Turn your bigger jobs into case studies, especially commercial ones, and ask the client to mention the work on their site with a link back. And don’t overlook local journalists and bloggers, a quick quote, a seasonal safety tip or a local-interest story can land a genuinely valuable link that money simply can’t buy. Writing a useful guest post for a local business blog or a trade site is another way in, and I walk through how in my guide to guest posting for electricians.
The aim is a handful of solid, relevant links built up steadily over a few months, not a flood of rubbish overnight. Three to five good ones will do more for you than a hundred junk ones, and they’ll still be working long after the cheap ones have rotted.
You don’t have to do all this yourself.
Reading it is one thing; doing it properly, month after month, is another. Hand it over and you can get back to what you’re brilliant at, the actual electrical work, and get your evenings back.
Citations and brand mentions
Not every off-page signal is a link. Consistent business listings, called citations, and plain brand mentions across local directories and trade sites all add up to tell Google you’re a real, settled business in your area. The catch is consistency: your Name, Address, Phone and Website have to match everywhere, down to the detail, because even “Street” versus “St.” can weaken the signal. It’s the same discipline as in the local SEO guide, and it’s another of those quietly important jobs that only works when it’s done thoroughly rather than half-finished. My guide to NAP consistency for electricians shows how to check yours.
What to steer well clear of
Off-page is where dodgy agencies do the most lasting damage, because the worst tactics look like progress right up until Google notices. Avoid buying cheap bulk links, the “1,000 backlinks for £20” deals, and give private blog networks (PBNs) and link farms a very wide berth. Steer clear of irrelevant or foreign sites that have nothing to do with your trade or your area, and don’t stuff the exact same keyword as the anchor text on every link you do get, an unnaturally tidy link profile is itself a red flag.
Google can and does penalise spammy link profiles, and clawing your way back from a penalty is far harder, and far slower, than simply doing it properly in the first place. Slow, relevant and local wins. It’s just that “slow” is the part most people can’t stomach on their own.
Link building is the slowest, most relationship-heavy part of SEO to do yourself, which is why it’s a core part of every campaign I run, and why it carries on through maintenance mode too. Message me on WhatsApp.
