Electrician SEO Tips

How Can Electricians Track Their Google Business Profile Success?

Electricians can track their Google Business Profile (GBP) success for free by checking the Performance section for calls, checking their Google Maps rankings by hand, and asking every new customer how they found them. Electrician SEO Pro's rule is to track what leads to jobs: calls first, then contact form enquiries and direction requests, not profile views.

What does Google Business Profile success look like for an electrician?

Google Business Profile success for an electrician means more leads: more calls, more contact form enquiries and more direction requests, because those turn into customers and money. Electrician SEO Pro's rule is to judge the profile by leads rather than profile views, photo views or search impressions, which are nice to know but don't pay the bills.

It's simple: more leads, so you get more customers, so you make more money. Success for you might look like:

  • More calls.
  • More contact form enquiries, which lead to free quotes. These don't show up in your profile's numbers, so count them from your own inbox or form.
  • More direction requests, if customers come to a unit or office.

If you're unsure, I'd always track calls. More people on the phone is more chances to win the job.

Notice what's not on the list: profile views, photo views, search impressions or "better rankings". Sure, they're nice to know. But they don't mean much if your lights aren't turned on.

So where do you find those numbers, for free?

How can electricians track their Google Business Profile performance for free?

Electricians can track their Google Business Profile performance for free in the Performance section of the profile: search for the business name while signed in to the Google account that manages it, open Performance, go to the Calls tab and note the last three months. Electrician SEO Pro starts with calls because they're the number closest to a booked job.

You don't need expensive tools to see whether your profile is winning you jobs. It's all in the Google Business Profile dashboard:

Step 1: Search for your business name. Go to Google, sign in to the account that manages your profile, and search for your business name. A panel called "Your business on Google" appears.

Step 2: Click Performance. It's one of the buttons in that panel.

Step 3: Look at the tabs. In my screenshot the tabs across the top are Overview, Calls, Bookings and Website clicks. Google moves things around, so if yours look different, look for Calls.

Step 4: Open Calls and note the last three months. There's no need to write down every individual month. I just want you to know where you're at now, so you know whether there's work to be done.

Calls tell you what's happening. The next question is what's behind them.

Which searches show an electrician's Google Business Profile to customers?

An electrician can see which searches show their Google Business Profile to customers by opening the Overview tab in Performance and scrolling down to the searches breakdown, which lists the search terms that showed the profile in Google's results. Electrician SEO Pro uses that list to see which keywords are putting an electrician in front of people.

Here's the Overview scrolled down. You get the number of people who viewed the profile, the split between Google Search and Google Maps on mobile and desktop, and the search terms behind it (blurred out here):

It's a great place to see which keywords are bringing the profile up, and so where your calls are likely coming from. The honest limit: it shows the searches that showed your profile, not the searches that made someone ring, so it tells you where to look more than it proves anything.

Google's numbers only cover people who found you on Google, though. To see where you stand against other electricians, check Maps by hand.

How can an electrician check where they rank on Google Maps?

An electrician can check where they rank on Google Maps by searching Google Maps for the keywords they want to win, such as electrician near me or emergency electrician plus their town, noting their position, and repeating it from a few different areas they cover. Electrician SEO Pro's target is a top-three position, because the Map Pack shows three businesses.

This one's more manual and takes time, because you check each keyword and write it down. But it's worth it to see which keywords are working for you, and so what might be driving more calls.

Step 1: Open Google Maps.

Step 2: Search the keywords you're targeting. Take them from your keyword research. If you need ideas, these are common ones you should be showing up for:

  • "Electrician near me"
  • "Emergency electrician (your town)"
  • "House rewire (your town)"
  • "Fuse board upgrade (your town)"

Step 3: See where you show up. If you're in the top three positions for a keyword, great. If not, there are improvements to be made.

Step 4: Search from different areas. Try it from a few of your service areas if you can. Ask a mate to check from another town if needed, because rankings can differ heavily from place to place.

Step 5: Keep a note. You don't need anything fancy, as long as you know your starting point. Here's an example tracker for an electrician in Stockton-on-Tees, with all the numbers made up:

A Maps check is a snapshot. The most honest data comes from the customers themselves.

How can an electrician find out how customers found them?

An electrician can find out how customers found them by asking every new customer how they heard about the business, once the conversation starts, and writing the answer down. Electrician SEO Pro rates this as the most honest tracking method there is, because it comes straight from the customer and covers channels no dashboard can see.

This one's by far the best way, because it comes straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. When you start work for a customer and the casual conversation begins, just ask how they found you. It's a great way to find out which channel, beyond your profile, they came from. It could be:

  • Your website.
  • Social media.
  • YouTube.
  • Your Google Business Profile.
  • Word of mouth.

Jot it down either way. Over time, you'll see which channels are working, which need more time and which, if any, aren't a good play for you and need shutting down.

Once the tracking is running, the next question is how long to wait.

How long does it take for an electrician's Google Business Profile to show results?

It takes an electrician's Google Business Profile months, not weeks, to show results, and longer in a competitive area. Electrician SEO Pro's rough guide is groundwork in the first one to three months, real lifts from three to six, and the strongest results from six to twelve, for an electrician who keeps the profile complete and the reviews coming. It's a rough guide, not a promise.

Short answer: it's not overnight. Longer-ish answer: it depends on your competition. Google Business Profile success is a slow burner, but once it catches, it really starts rolling. That usually happens once everything on your profile is properly optimised and you've built up a decent chunk of reviews. When that's happened, here's what I'd expect:

  • 1 to 3 months: groundwork. You might see a few more views and calls if you've properly optimised your listing, with a good description, photos and reviews coming in. Don't expect to dominate the Map Pack yet.
  • 3 to 6 months: real lifts. If you've kept your info tight, kept the profile updated and kept getting reviews, you should start noticing more views, more direct phone calls and a small bump in rankings for your key terms, like "electrician near me". This is where a lot of people give up. Don't be one of them.
  • 6 to 12 months: momentum. If you've been consistent and your competition hasn't, expect more Map Pack appearances and more calls straight from your profile. It's momentum-based: the longer you stay active, the more Google trusts you, and the stronger your profile gets.

It's a bit like compound interest. Small moves early turn into bigger results later. A lesson for life, really.

And if the numbers aren't moving, the fix is usually in the basics.

What should electricians do if their Google Business Profile is not getting calls?

If their Google Business Profile is not getting calls, electricians should go back to the basics: complete every part of the profile, build a steady stream of reviews, and keep their business details the same everywhere. In Electrician SEO Pro's view the basics come before anything fancy, and the sign to look for is the Calls figure in Performance creeping up over a few months.

If you're here, you're probably already fed up with your results and ready to get your profile moving. Work through these:

I don't mean you should obsess over the numbers. Check them often enough to know what's working, what isn't and what needs adjusting, so you're bringing in as many leads as possible month after month.

Track what leads to jobs. Ignore what only looks nice.
